Take a look at the Daily News’ All-Area girls soccer team for the 2021-22 season. Westlake’s Tatum Wynalda is the player of the year.
“The fact that she was on campus and couldn’t play for two years was miserable,” Westlake coach Frank Marino said.“It just made me so much more motivated and excited to play,” Wynalda said. “There were a couple of us, and I think all of us together were just so excited and so motivated to play. We all wanted to play for everybody around us.”
It was one of the fastest goals scored in program history. She also holds the program record for most consecutive hat tricks with three and tied for most assists in a game with five. On top of the individual accomplishments, the Warriors won their first Marmonte League title since 2017. Wynalda is blazing her own trail in a family bursting with soccer talent — most notably, her dad, Eric Wynalda. He played for Major League Soccer, scoring the first goal in league history, and was the leading goal-scorer for the U.S. National Team until 2008.
Wynalda, who scored 28 goals and tallied nine assists this season, will continue her soccer career at Pepperdine University, where her uncle coaches. She plans to play professionally afterward.
