Dallas students question O’Rourke, Tippetts on immigration, Texas education
Skyline High School juniors Aaron Thompson, left, and Rosa Gutierrez, ask gubernatorial candidate Beto O'Rourke a question during a student-led gubernatorial forum at Skyline High School in Dallas, on Tuesday, May 17, 2022.Dallas high schoolers Aaron Thompson and Rosa Gutierrez wanted the work they were doing with the Student Voter Empowerment Coalition at Yvonne Ewell Townview Center to be more meaningful to the wider student body.
“The fact that they are willing to lead is impressive, but also necessary,” O’Rourke said after the event. “I can’t think of a major moment in American history where young people weren’t at the vanguard.” March to the Polls leaders say that their push to get young voters involved is a key cog in turning around Dallas’ typically woeful voter turnout, ranked as one of the nation’s worst among large citiesThe group is also the official voting registrar for a handful of North Texas school districts, including Dallas, Garland and Richardson.
Thompson and Gutierrez served as moderators for the gubernatorial forum. Both said the push for voter engagement is rooted in something personal. While securing the candidates for Texas governor was the initial concern, the most stressful process, Thompson admitted, was drafting the dozen or so questions used for the forum.
