Rev. Dr. George Mason of Faith Commons in Dallas has been in Israel since Oct. 1 and was in Jerusalem when the attack happened.
Mason, founder and president of the Dallas-based interfaith organization Faith Commons, has been in Israel since Oct. 1. He had traveled to a Palestinian university in Bethlehem first for a conference, then arrived Thursday in Jerusalem to meet a Faith Commons tour group that would begin Monday.Half of the group had their flights cancelled after Gaza-based terrorist organization Hamas launched a surprise attack Saturday on Israel during a major Jewish holiday.
The other half of Mason’s group landed, and they were sheltering-in-place in their Jerusalem hotel until Monday morning. Mason said they were allowed to wander a short distance from their hotel, where they saw the quiet scenes of a community in lockdown. In contrast, he heard rockets being launched into Jerusalem and “loud booms” when Israel’s air defense system, the Iron Dome, stopped them. Sirens followed, sending Mason and his group back inside the hotel.
The tour, co-led by Mason’s Faith Commons partner Rabbi Nancy Kasten, was not just a pilgrimage, but intended to educate goers on the possibility for peace in the 75-year Israel-Palestine conflict. The group was to meet with members of all faiths, including some Palestinians and Israelis, to learn how they were working toward peace and understanding in the face of violence.“On the ground, there are people who are creating the conditions for future coexistence and peace.
