Dallas isn’t accepting homeless encampments | Opinion
The sun sets behind a homeless encampment under the I-345 overhead in downtown Dallas in 2021. The encampment has been cleared and options offered to the homeless people living there.During 2022, an estimated 4,410 people were homeless on any given night in Dallas and Collin counties. Almost all of those, about 90%, were within Dallas County.
Since it began last fall, the Dallas Real Time Rapid Rehousing Initiative — a two-year, $72 million project to house 2,700 individuals by October 2023 — has enrolled 1,707 people and successfully housed 912 people. When a site is cleared, those displaced are given the opportunity to be enrolled in the rehousing program, which not only finds someone a place to stay but also provides health, addiction and other services as needed.
The success of the projects in less than a year highlights the city’s commitment to provide permanent homes to people in encampments.
