Johnson, a former state representative who was first elected mayor in 2019, made public safety, city ethics reform, workforce development, increasing parks and green space, and boosting the city’s international standing among his top priorities. Over a four-year term, he dealt with
“Public safety remains my top priority, and I will continue to leverage every available tool to achieve our goal of making Dallas the safest large city in America,” Johnson said. “Our residents need and deserve additional property tax relief and we must stabilize our first responders’ pension.” The mayor appeared to be gearing up for a reelection run since at least last summer. He reported in his campaign finance reports raising almost $466,000 in political donations from July 2022 to the end of December 2022. His fundraising slowed after the filing deadline, and he reported adding almost another $44,000 in contributions during the first four months of 2023.
Johnson faced questions about his leadership at points during his first term. He clashed with the majority of the City Council over police budget funding in 2020 and repeatedly called for the salaries of Broadnax and other top city administrative officials to be cut amid the pandemic.
