The Deep Ellum bar hosts nearly 400 sand volleyball teams, which now need a new place to play.

Skyler “Dale” Davis, one of Sandbar’s four owners, confirmed that the lease has expired and they could not renew it. Sandbar’s owners originally signed a 10-year lease and were then paying month-to-month, hoping they’d get to stay at the address where Davis and his friends built the bar and volleyball court by hand.“We just don’t have the money to compete.”
“Volleyball can be a competitive sport, but it can be a real social sport,” he says. “You don’t have to be awesome to go out and play volleyball.” Dallas resident Jeff Cavanaugh has been playing on several sand volleyball teams at Sandbar for two years. He’s there at least three nights a week, sometimes more if he offers to sub for another team.

Mississippi went from being ranked the second-worst state in 2013 for fourth-grade reading to 21st in 2022. Louisiana and Alabama, meanwhile, were among only three states to see gains in fourth-grade reading amid the pandemic, which saw massive learning setbacks in most other states.
