Development Services Director Andrew Espinosa told city council members Wednesday that his office has set a deadline of the end of September 2023 to...

City officials are now aiming for the end of September 2023 to issue residential permits within three to five business days.7:33 PM on Nov 2, 2022 CDT — Updated at 8:04 PM on Nov 2, 2022 CDT

The average number of days to issue a residential permit in September was 40, city records show. That’s up from 32- and 33-day averages from June through August but down from 58 days in May and 55 days in April. But problems still persist for many, according to Phil Crone, executive director of the Dallas Builders Association. The group represents 1,300 members in the Dallas area. He said a recent survey conducted by his group found 80% of respondents say it takes at least 10 weeks to get residential building permits from Dallas.Delays in approval to build and rebuild in Dallas have persisted.

“If we can’t have people build, we won’t have more people move here, we won’t have our businesses grow,” said council member Cara Mendelsohn. “Already, every person on this council hears people say, ‘It’s just too hard to work with Dallas.’” The city has upgraded ProjectDox, the software system used for submitting and processing permits, to better track how long it takes to issue them. The latest budget adds 54 new positions to the department and a review is in the works examining the pay of workers.
