When Fine absorbed a final, ferocious hit that sidelined him late in the fourth quarter, Dolegala stepped in and completed four of five passes in a red-hot minute, capping a 100-yard touchdown drive with another pinpointed rocket to double-covered receiver Shawn Bane Jr.
Fine was outperformed by his understudy but wasn’t the primary reason for the loss. Thanks to another impressive performance from Saskatchewan’s defence, particularly linebackers Micah Teitz and Derrick Moncrief and rush end Pete Robertson, the Roughriders outgained Toronto’s high-powered offence 426-200 in net yards. But the Argonauts forced five turnovers while returning one interception and one punt for touchdowns.
Quite simply, Dolegala gives the Riders the better chance of winning and ultimately qualifying for the CFL playoffs. And you have to wonder about the football acumen of anyone who doesn’t see that. This is somewhat reminiscent of 2015, just 1 1/2 seasons after the Roughriders’ most recent Grey Cup appearance , when head coach Corey Chamblin led an 0-8 squad into Ottawa and kept playing incompetent quarterback Tino Sunseri, who repeatedly showed he wasn’t going to lead anyone to the promised land. Or the playoffs.
