Had Star Wars' Duel of the Fates gone the other way with Darth Maul killing both Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon, the galaxy would have faced dire consequences.
The Phantom Menace's "Duel of the Fates" is inarguably the most important lightsaber duel in the Skywalker saga, so much so that Darth Maul's victory would have changed the entire trajectory of the Star Wars galaxy's future. Although the Sith Lord apprentice to Palpatine slew Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn on the planet Naboo, Maul was defeated by Obi-Wan Kenobi and was believed to have been dead in the decade that followed before the dawn of the Clone Wars.
Although Anakin's prowess and skills in destroying the Trade Federation's control ship likely helped prove his power in the Force, the sway of Kenobi's determination was likely the deciding factor in the Council's decision to have Anakin be trained. This also leads to the unavoidable question of what Anakin might have become had he been trained by a surviving Qui-Gon rather than Kenobi.
Instead, Palpatine quickly moved on in the aftermath of The Phantom Menace, acting as if Maul had never existed. Having failed his master, Maul was no longer a weapon to be wielded. Palpatine also made it brutally clear during The Clone Wars that Maul was no longer Palpatine's apprentice after he resurfaced, having outlived his usefulness while also becoming a rival due to the power Maul had amassed within the criminal underworld.
