McCormick, narrowly defeated in the 2022 primary by Dr. Mehmet Oz, has broad support across the Republican spectrum as the party's best possible challenger to three-term incumbent U.S. Senator Robert P. Casey Jr.
The news service cited two sources it said have confirmed McCormick will announce his candidacy for the 2024 race later this month.
If he is successful in the Republican primary - and at the moment state Republican leaders are working assiduously to clear the field for him - McCormick will face a formidable challenge in taking on three-term incumbent Sen. Robert P. Casey Jr.
In their memo addressed to McCormick, the group - including State Chairman Lawrence Tabas, former Gov. Tom Corbett, state Treasurer Stacy Garrity, 37 county party chairs, and a battery of elected officials - stated “we can think of no one better suited to serve the Commonwealth in the U.S. Senate, and urge you to run.”
The national Republicans believe McCormick is moderate enough to appeal to suburbanites and stable enough to help other candidates on the ticket.
