The Air Force maintains its Tucson base will have important new defense roles to play after the A-10 'Warthog' is retired.

Ten years after the Pentagon repealed the ban on women in ground combat positions, female soldiers have risen in the ranks of frontline units.Top officials with the U.S. Air Force maintained Thursday the Davis-Monthan base in Tucson will remain an important part of the nation’s defense plans even as the A-10 fighter jets are phased out in coming years.

“Overall, it should be neutral or maybe just a bit of a bump up in personnel when it’s all said and done,” said Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Air Force chief of staff, during a hearing before the House Armed Services Committee. Brown said the military had received “great support” from the delegation and the community on its plans.

Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., a member of the committee who has been a longtime advocate for the A-10, questioned whether the Air Force was growing too dependent on higher technology weapons and what will provide the kind of close-air support for troops that the A-10 has for decades. It comes as the Pentagon is moving away from systems needed in places such as Afghanistan, and toward more advanced flight systems capable of fighting Chinese or Russian crafts.Earlier this month, four key members of the delegation wrote to Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall noting they were “encouraged” by the Air Force’s five-year plan, but they added that Davis-Monthan “should and must maintain a critical role in our national defense.

The letter marked a shift in tone from the delegation, which for more than a decade had fought to keep the A-10’s traditional role within the Pentagon’s stable of hardware.
