The boys’ father left one night and the mother moved them all in with my stepdaughter the next day. What now?

This is definitely a very difficult situation made even messier by how quicky everything has transpired. You are absolutely right to be concerned for your stepdaughter. However, there isn’t much that you can do aside from serving as a voice of reason and being there for her, which she very well may need as this thing could easily find her nursing some heartbreak.

Continue talking to your stepdaughter and her partner about the importance of getting some professional support for the kids, and perhaps for themselves as they navigate the challenges that come with this new family structure. It is particularly important that the children feel safe and stable, and while it is entirely possible that the home they have with your stepdaughter is more equipped to give them that than the last, this is still afor young people to have to deal with.

I think we have a clear picture of what vacationing with a baby would look like, e.g., little to no activities, just basking in the sun someplace warm. I think we really need this, but the idea of traveling with a 12-month-old on a six-hour flight sounds masochistic at best and delusional at worst. Everything has been so hard this year, I can’t help wondering, are we crazy to attempt this, too?
