OPINION: 'Replacing the buildings that house the criminal justice system is no replacement for real criminal justice reform. For any kind of true reform, it must occur in the hearts and minds of the people who control the levers of justice in the system.'
ATLANTA -- In 2016, I was the personal bailiff for the Honorable Judge Raymond L. Pianka of the Cleveland Housing Court. That year, Judge Pianka received a communication from Cuyahoga County officials asking for his attendance at a “working session” regarding the potential replacement of the Justice Center. If you knew Judge Pianka, you could have guessed his response. He believed that buildings were history, worthy of preservation as much as artifacts sitting on display in a museum.
Judge Pianka had no desire to attend the session, but he did want to know what happened at the session. Did anyone else have concerns like he did? Is the decision to replace the building already made? If so, who made it and when? How much is it going to cost? Why replacement rather than repair/restoration? That’s where I, the loyal personal bailiff, came in. It was a simple reconnaissance mission: Keep my eyes and ears open and report back.
