Pursuit, a 4-year-old American bulldog mix, is set to be euthanized Monday Feb. 13, despite protests by experienced volunteers and an offer by one volunteer to take him home.
Pursuit, the longest serving dog at Harrisburg Humane SocietyPursuit, a four-year-old American bulldog mix, is the longest serving canine resident at the Humane Society in Harrisburg.
Also unlike many longtime shelter dogs, he’s gotten used to the rhythms of the institution, and has not shown signs of excessive stress. But volunteers told PennLive Pursuit hasn’t bitten anyone and they are unaware of any incidents beyond his current condition of not easily warming up to strangers. PennLive sent two emails to Brunish, and left three voicemail messages at the shelter on Thursday and Friday and stopped by the shelter on Friday, but could not get any shelter official to respond to questions about the decision to kill Pursuit.
“He’s hurt inside,” another volunteer said. “He’s not dangerous. He’s not going to walk right up to someone or have someone put their hands on him right away…But he wants to trust someone so much. I can see that.” But they say a trainer hasn’t worked with Pursuit, even though he’s the longest shelter resident. The volunteers believe he hasn’t been given a proper chance, with regular evaluations, before the abrupt decision last week to assess him and announce a death date.
