Defense Secretary Mark Esper has ordered a review of procedures for vetting foreign nationals and security on military installations following a shooting at a Pensacola, Florida, naval base
SIMI VALLEY, Calif. — Defense Secretary Mark Esper has ordered a review of procedures for vetting foreign nationals and security on military installations following a shooting at a naval base in Pensacola, Fla., by a Saudi military trainee that killed three people and wounded 11 others.
In an interview at the Reagan National Defense Forum at the Reagan Presidential Library, Esper called the Friday shooting a “tragic incident” and said the Pentagon has “taken precautions.”“Yesterday, I directed that we look at our security precautions across the services and all of our installations and bases and facilities to make sure that [we’ve] got the appropriate degree of security to protect our service members and their families and our communities,” Esper said.
“No. I can’t say it’s terrorism at this time,” Esper said. “I think we need to let the investigators, the FBI, do its work and … get us the facts and we’ll move out from there.” The comment was in contrast to a statement by Rep. Matt Gaetz, whose district includes the naval base. On Friday, he tweeted "This was not a murder. This was an act of terrorism."
