Club is 'in contact' with trainers and workers as storm looms, could ship horses to Los Alamitos for safety's sake
The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club officials will wait until Saturday morning to make a decision on Sunday’s racing program.“We’re in contact with trainers and workers about the care of our horses,” Del Mar president and chief operating officer Josh Rubinstein said Friday. “We could ship some of the horses to Los Alamitos if necessary.Many of the horses at Del Mar are housed in stalls in the barns behind the backstretch.
“Horses are not widgets,” said Rubinstein. “They have schedules and are prepared for certain races on certain dates. We’ll try to work in any lost races where we can. But we won’t add more than one race a day to the existing Saturday and Sunday schedules.” The Leonard Powell-trained Anisette has already won the Grade II San Clemente Stakes at Del Mar on July 22. She will again have Umberto Rispoli aboard as she seeks a fourth straight win as a 5-2 morning line favorite.
