Relatives of many of the 52 members of the United Federation of Teachers who have died are facing the same problem, union representatives told POLITICO. “I have family members who are waiting over a month for a death certificate, so that delays any other benefits they could possibly get,” Penny said. “On top of losing your loved one, now you are concerned with health insurance.”
A spokesperson at the Department of Health, Patrick Gallahue, disputed that there is a significant delay in issuing death certificates. Mayor Bill de Blasio, when asked Monday for an update on these reported delays, said he was “very adamant” about offering “broad strokes answers.”
