Cases from the city of Zhangjiajie, located in the Hunan province, have reportedly led to outbreaks in at least five provinces, according to Chinese state media.
China reported 71 new locally acquired Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, its worst outbreak in months, fueled by the more infectious delta variant of the coronavirus forcing officials to seal the city of Zhangjiajie which is now being viewed as the epicenter of the outbreak across the country.... [+]the Chinese National Health Commission , more than half of Wednesday’s cases were reported in the coastal province of Jiangsu, connected to an outbreak in its capital of Nanjing.
The outbreak in Nanjing is believed to have been fueled by a passenger arriving from Russia while they were infected with the delta variant. Health officials have also zeroed in on the city of Zhangjiajie in Hunan Province— specifically a theater in the city which wasover several days and is now believed the epicenter of another growing outbreak across China.
While Zhangjiajie has reported only 19 new cases so far, cases tied to the city and the theater have been reported in at least five provinces, Chinese state media reported. This prompted authorities to seal the city on Tuesday, banning any tourist or resident from leaving the city,The city’s Communist Party disciplinary committee on Wednesday issued a list of local officials who will be punished for having a “negative impact” on pandemic mitigation efforts.485.
