Louisiana, Florida and Oregon have reported record hospitalizations in recent weeks as the Delta variant spreads, predominantly affecting unvaccinated residents, whoThere were 3,022 people hospitalized with Covid-19 across Louisiana on Aug. 17, compared with 2,069 on Jan. 7, the highest level the state experienced during a nationwide winter surge, when more than 123,800 people were hospitalized across the U.S.

The fresh influx of patients has pushed governors in Oregon, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Texas to add resources to hospitals. Some healthcare systems, meanwhile, have postponed elective surgeries to make more bed space available.
