Of the 34,656 alpha cases, 764 ended up hospitalized within 14 days of testing positive for the virus, while 196 of the 8,682 delta cases ended up admitted to a hospital during that period.

After adjusting for factors like age, ethnicity and vaccination status “that are known to affect susceptibility to severe illness from Covid-19,” the researchers found the risk of being admitted to hospital increased 2.26-fold with the delta variant. The peer-reviewed study highlighted that only 1.8% of the cases of either variant were among people who had received both doses of the vaccine, meaning its results “primarily tell us about the risk of hospital admission for those who are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.”

“Further research is needed” to see how hospitalization risks compare between fully vaccinated individuals infected with the delta variant compared to the alpha variant, the researchers said, noting a“Our analysis highlights that in the absence of vaccination, any delta outbreaks will impose a greater burden on healthcare than an alpha epidemic,” Dr. Anne Presanis, a senior statistician at the Medical Reserve Corps and a lead author of the study, said in a statement.
