DeMeco Ryans on Texans' free-agent moves: 'We're not going to overpay just to overpay'

DeMeco Ryans defended a Texans free-agent haul that was once again uneventful compared to that of other NFL teams.PHOENIX — An old grievance provokes a genuine laugh. Texans coach DeMeco Ryans leans back in his chair and considers the half-joke that questions if he’d had to promise former 49ers defensive back Jimmie Ward that he’d play free safety again if he signed with Houston.

Ordinarily, the Texans’ rebuild is uneventful in free agency. They’ve been the proverbial penny-pincher in the past two offseasons, the debt-saddled man slow-playing well whiskey at the bar until his next paycheck clears. But with a salary cap-cleared budget, the franchise’s fourth head coach in four seasons had the privilege of helping general manager Nick Caserio complete contract agreements with players of positional need Houston couldn’t previously afford.

Most of the premier players were untouchable. Pro Bowl defensive tackle Daron Payne , All-Pro linebacker Roquan Smith and promising quarterback Daniel Jones all re-signed with their previous teams while simultaneously setting the market for subsequent signings with significantly subordinate options.

It is the shorter lengths of the contracts, not their total amount, which make the Texans’ moves appear more conservative than they are. Their one-year contracts with defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins , tight end Dalton Schultz and running back Devin Singletary account for 12.6 percent of the franchise’s top 51 contracts.
