The Senate Democrats' campaign arm is releasing a billboard attack campaign against Gov. Jim Justice (R-WV) while a lawsuit against him to obtain his schedule as governor unfolds.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is putting billboards near Justice’s luxury Greenbrier resort and the Kanawha County Courthouse in the Mountain State, according to early reports from the Hill.The ad will read “What is Jim Justice Hiding?” and point onlookers to a website highlighting Justice’s various scandals. The billboards are set to remain posted for one month.
After Justice cast his bid for Senate in April, the DSCC launched a lawsuit against the West Virginia Republican, seeking his official schedule and calendar as governor and for similar records from members of his staff. Under the state's Freedom of Information Act, the DSCC sued for the information going back to the governor’s first term to investigate reports that Justice was often absent from his job.
Justice has refused to hand over the requested documents as of August, according to the DSCC, which filed the lawsuit in May. The DSCC said it sued Justice after a 2019 analysis detailing seven months of Justice’s calendar showed barely any meetings with his Cabinet and limited time spent at the Capitol.
“Jim Justice cannot continue to hide his work schedule — or lack thereof — from West Virginians. We fully expect Justice’s schedule will receive further scrutiny in his nasty primary and in a court of law,” DSCC spokeswoman Amanda Sherman Baity said in a press release from Aug. 10.Justice is vying for the seat currently held by Sen. Joe Manchin , who has yet to announce whether he’ll run for reelection in 2024 as talks of a potential third-party presidential run circulate.
