The order's list of essential activities includes religious services, pet care and recreation such as walking and swimming.Public health experts had been calling on DeSantis to impose a stay-at-home order as the coronavirus gained ground in Florida. The state has reported“It’s not too late for everyone,” said Aileen Marty, a pandemic and infectious diseases expert at Florida International University. “But it’s too late for the people who got sick and got infected.
He specifically noted that a recommendation from the White House Coronavirus Task Force to institute a stay-at-home order would carry “a lot of weight.”DeSantis, who spoke with Trump Wednesday morning, was facing a daily churn of national negative headlines for not shutting down the state, a narrative amplified by pictures and video of people gathered at state beaches and parks.Florida Democrats who had led the charge for a statewide order applauded the DeSantis move, but not its timing.
