Coach Kevin Stefanski said after practice Monday that Watson is ‘day to day’ for Sunday’s game, and declined an opportunity to say he’s optimistic that Watson will play.
If Watson can’t play, the Browns might turn to ninth-year pro P.J. Walker over Dorian Thompson-Robinson because of his experience. Walker, 28, is 4-3 in his seven NFL starts with the Panthers from 2020-22. Thompson-Robinson went 19 of 36 for 121 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions for a 25.3 rating. He was overmatched by the Ravens, and would likely also be by the 49ers, with the likes of Nick Bosa, Fred Warner and Javon Hargrave.
“ a veteran,” Stefanski said. “He’s been in multiple systems, so he’s caught up. Obviously it’s not the same as when you’re here all spring and all summer. But he’s a vet, so he’s doing a nice job.” Watson also told CBS’ Evan Washburn that he had fluid on the shoulder, which is common with a bruised shoulder. The trauma occurred during the third quarter of the 27-3 victory over the Titans when he took a hard short to the shoulder from Amani Hooker after a 10 yard scramble.
