Harsin emerged from that probe unscathed and invigorated, and he’s aiming to turn the program around in Year 2 while silencing many of the sceptics and critics who believe he’s not long for the Plains. The outside expectations for Auburn this season have been tempered; the Tigers are unranked in both preseason polls, their Las Vergas over/under win total is 6.5, and they were picked to finish last in the SEC West at SEC Media Days last month.
CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd and 247Sports’ Brandon Marcello both believe Auburn could climb into the top-10 by early October if they can take advantage of their opening five-game homestand. Those first five games at Jordan-Hare include Mercer and San Jose State before a pivotal nonconference showdown with Penn State. That’s followed by SEC games against Missouri and LSU.
Eight wins would be a “remarkable turnaround” for Harsin, according to ESPN Radio’s Ian Fitzsimmons. But would it be enough to satiate a passionate fanbase and alleviate some of the pressure on Harsin? However things shake out, it should be an interesting season on the Plains. Harsin knows the pressure he’s under, and he knows another season like 2021 won’t cut it. He needs tangible results and proof of concept that he can build upon and carry into positive momentum on the recruiting trail if he wants to get Auburn to where he believes it can reach as a program on the national stage.
