“We encourage everyone in Pennsylvania to move forward with normal buying, cooking, and eating habits,' Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding said.
Cage-free chickens walk in a fenced pasture Oct. 21, 2015, at an organic farm near Waukon, Iowa. Some farmers are wondering if it's OK that eggs sold as free-range come from chickens being kept inside. It's a question that arises lately as farmers try to be open about their product while also protecting chickens from a highly infectious bird flu that has killed roughly 28 million poultry across the country.
“While we’re very concerned about the threat this avian influenza outbreak is to Pennsylvania’s $7.1 billion poultry industry, food safety and availability is not something to worry about,” Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding said via a press release. “We encourage everyone in Pennsylvania to move forward with normal buying, cooking, and eating habits.”no human cases of avian influenza viruses have been detected in the United States, the department said.
According to the press release, the chance of infected poultry entering the food chain is extremely low due to the high frequency of testing in facilities. All poultry products are inspected for signs of disease at multiple points before hitting store shelves. The statement added that proper cooking of poultry products provides protection from viruses and bacteria, including avian influenza.
