The right shoe for: Recovery days, when your legs are feeling dead.
. That’s not especially bulky, but it does put the Clifton 5 squarely in the daily-trainer category, or makes it better suited for recovery runs than for any speedwork.
The shoe’s cushioning, too, has evolved over the years. Early models were exceptionally squishy—you may notice Hoka’s advertising campaign features marshmallows. The new model isn’t particularly marshmallowy, however, especially in the heel. Tests at the Runner’s World Shoe Lab show the heel is considerably firmer in this version. “Hokas always add a little ‘pop’ in your step, and that feeling is still there,” says one tester, “but it takes too much work to get it.
Beyond that tweak, nothing else under the foot has changed. And only minor adjustments have been made to the upper, which now features a sleek engineered mesh. That allows Hoka to strip away the small overlays it used on the previous version, resulting in a much cleaner aesthetic without affecting the shoe’s support.The Clifton 5 continues to use a single, thick piece of EVA foam for the midsole.
As we said above, the heel of this version is fairly firm. In the Lab, it measures about average for all shoes available out there. It’ll still feel soft, but not marshmallowy when you heel strike. The forefoot, on the other hand, is still exceptionally pillowy. It’s also stiff , but the shoe is curved for an easier time rolling through your stride. The very soft foam also helps with that.Under the foot, the rubber configuration remains identical to version 4.
