WIRED Sturdy and fun. Subtle design with no unnecessary extras. Integrated fenders and rear rack. TIRED At 51 pounds, it's quite heavy. Doesn't fit riders shorter than about 5' 6' (From 2021)

As long as I stayed on pavement, cement, or hardpack gravel, the bike felt secure. But I also experienced a few moments of terror, namely the time I hit a soft gravel shoulder while in Turbo mode and fish-tailed my way out of a crash. Lesson learned. When switching to an unstable road surface, with so much bike to maneuver, it’s never a good idea to hit it going fast. On another ride, when fiddling around with settings on the computer, I hit a deep pothole in the middle of a busy street.

I encountered a few small glitches, including a front dropout that was stripped upon the bike’s arrival, which made it impossible to tighten the front wheel. Diamondback told me it’s an uncommon issue, one likely either caused by dirty threads or an excess of paint applied at the factory. Nonetheless, the fix required a trip to a bike shop, where the mechanic had to order a new tap to rethread the dropout.

The other minor, easily fixable glitch was that, on my first ride, the computer failed to register my speed. The magnetic sensor attached to a back wheel spoke on the nondrive side had somehow become misaligned with its counterpart on the chain stay. The fix was easy with a few turns of a Phillips screwdriver and a realignment, but it’s a reminder that ebikes have unique moving parts that their riders need to track and monitor for the bike to perform correctly.

Minor glitches aside, the more I rode the Union 1, the more I appreciated its appeal as an alternative to my car. Without fail, every time I pedaled it through the city, I momentarily forgot about smoke, fires, heat, and Covid. Instead I focused on the wind in my face and the joy of riding a bike fast—especially when my destination was the beach.
