The Diamondbacks’ first taste of the pitch clock in a pair of split-squad games on Saturday did not result in quick games.

The Diamondbacks’ first taste of the pitch clock in a pair of split-squad games on Saturday did not result in quick games, but players seemed to view it as a learning experience, the first of many before Opening Day arrives late next month.

Third baseman Josh Rojas said he had conversations umpires about the nuances of the lone timeout each hitter is allowed per at-bat. He said he learned hitters no longer need to hold their hand up for time out as they dig in the box; they would be protected, the umpires told him, so long as they have not yet engaged visually with the pitcher’s mound.

“I don’t think it’s going to be a matter of feeling sped up,” he said. “It’s going to be, how do we stay locked in with the shorter window?” Chafin said he sometimes would change his pitch selection based on how a hitter sets up in the box, something he worries he will no longer have the luxury to do.The game at Salt River Fields took three hours, three minutes. The one at Hohokam Stadium took three hours, six minutes.Shortstop Nick Ahmed did not play Saturday and likely will not make his spring debut for at least another four or five days as he deals with inflammation in left wrist/forearm.
