Over the years, people used to ask fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg—the creator of the iconic wrap dress—what she wanted to do when she grew up. Her answer: “When I was growing up, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but I knew the kind of woman I wanted to—I wanted to be a woman in charge.” Then people would ask about the woman she designed for. [+]“In truth, being in charge is first and foremost a commitment to ourselves,” says von Furstenberg. “That’s important. It begins with us. Because I’m now at the time in my life that I am so old and have lived so fully that I should be twice my age. I have a lot of experiences. I have gone around the block many times. I have been everywhere. I have met everyone.
“Expand your universe. At least once a week, see someone or have a meeting or spend time with someone that normally you would not connect with. You might think you’re doing it for them, but the truth is it really expands your universe. It’s magical.”“People use the word ‘mentor.’ Sure it’s great, but it just gives me a little bit of an allergy because it’s a tiny bit condescending. But mentoring is really inspiring. And you can not undermine the power of storytelling.
