Reports of Max’s BamaRush documentary fitting young women with secret microphones during sorority recruitment at the University of Alabama sent the film crew into a frenzy last year, but its director says it was all merely a rumor. Details (and spoilers):
16 things we learned about Alabama sororities from ‘Bama Rush’Near the end of the documentary, we see a montage of social media video and comments buzzing about the crew possibly mic’ing up women to gain greater behind-the-scenes access to the rush process. “What do they think they are going to gain by recording girls going through rush?” a woman asks in one video. “They haven’t went up against this college yet, and I’m telling you, you don’t want to go up against the University of Alabama...
“This is a rumor that started on social media that has led to an article in The New York Times,” she says in the doc. “That my film that you are watching right now mic’d 20 potential new members to record what goes on inside the walls inside a sorority house.”While explaining how poor the sound quality would be from secret microphones, she stops when her hotel room air conditioner turns on and interrupts their interview, seemingly illustrating her point about audio.
The development even ultimately leads to one of the women participating in the doc, Shelby Rose from Illinois, to drop out of the project altogether. Fleit says after the New York Times article mentioned her by name and online speculation about the documentary began to grow,. Producers then hired a security detail for the remainder of filming.
