The controversial Section 31 has become a mainstay of modern Star Trek stories, but did it exist in the days of Star Trek: The Original Series?
Section 31 was created for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, the dark underbelly of Starfleet that went to extreme lengths to protect the citizens of the United Federation Of Planets, lengths that were often deeply immoral and against the Federation's values. Section 31 notably unleashed a morphogenic virus on the Changelings during the Dominion War, which remains a controversial decision.
Section 31's Retconned Star Trek History In TOS Initially set about a decade before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: Discovery presents Section 31 a bit differently than Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. In DS9, Section 31's very existence is only known by a select few, with even high ranking admirals being unaware of it.
