The helmer of 'The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart' explains the enduring musical legacy of the Gibb brothers, a trio that defined the sound of an era and influenced a generation of pop stars.
How did you get involved in this project?
Barry is the keeper of his family’s history. Was he ready to share those stories from the beginning, or did you have to coax some of those memories out of him? Barry notes how much Black musicians inspired the Bee Gees’ music. Additionally, they were caught up in the backlash to disco, which itself was rooted in racism and homophobia — particularly at the 1979 Disco Demolition Night at Chicago’s Comiskey Park, where a crate of disco records was blown up between baseball games, prompting the crowd to riot.
This is your first feature-length documentary as a director, though you’ve produced many films in your career. What is the biggest difference from what you typically work on?
