Disney CEO Bob Iger’s new book shows how the longtime CEO thinks about management differently than traditional corporate culture
The irony is that this style of management is most often ineffective. Usually, the more a boss acts this way, the worse employees perform. Lessons Learned from 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company
According to Iger, this small but critical step is one of the most defining traits of good managers. “You have to convey your priorities clearly and repeatedly. In my experience, it’s what separates great managers from the rest.” Setting clear goals allows the team to do what they do best with a clear purpose. “You can do a lot for the morale of the people around you...just by taking the guesswork out of their day-to-day.
A true test of leadership is how people act under pressure. And it’s usually the people who buy into their own power who are the most ruthless managers. The best managers are precisely the people who refuse to buy into the power. It’s the ones who stay tethered to earth. Be attentive: “In a company like Disney, if you don’t do the work, the people around you detect that right away and their respect for you disappears. You have to be attentive. You often have to sit through meetings that, if given the choice, you might choose not to sit through. You have to learn and absorb. You have to hear out other people’s problems and help find solutions. It’s all part of being a great manager.
As Iger puts it. “I’ve been asked a lot over the years about the best way to nurture ambition―both one’s own and that of other people you manage. As a leader, you should want those around you to be eager to rise up and take on more responsibility.” Good bosses, as Iger puts it, are not attached to the idea of being indispensable.
