Star Wars has revealed George Lucas' original plans for Leia in the sequel trilogy, proving that Disney denied fans a superior version of her story.
The Star Wars sequel trilogy may have brought Leia back to the big screen, but George Lucas' original plans reveal that Disney denied her a superior role in the movies. Leia returned in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the leader of the Resistance, reminiscent of her role in the original trilogy, and later trained Rey as Jedi, proving Luke right about her learning to use the Force.

This version of the sequels was very different overall from the trilogy that Disney eventually produced, especially in how it approached the classic characters. Luke Skywalker would have rebuilt the Jedi Order, the Skywalker grandkids would have been more prominent, and Leia would have had her time in the spotlight.

According to Lucas in The Star Wars Archives, "The movies are about how Leia - I mean, who else is going to be the leader? - is trying to build the Republic." There was no doubt in Lucas' mind that Leia should be the focus of the sequels, as the previous trilogies focused on Anakin and Luke Skywalker.
Why Didn't Lucasfilm Follow Lucas' Plan For Leia? One possible reason for Disney ditching Lucas' plans for Leia was that they didn't align with the company's goal for Star Wars. After the divisive reaction to Lucas' approach with the prequel trilogy, Disney was eager to recapture the classic Star Wars style that many fans had been craving. The Force Awakens ended up being a soft reboot of A New Hope, with the original trilogy characters filling their old roles.
Carrie Fisher's passing in 2016 also meant that Star Wars: Episode IX required drastic revisions. The final film in Disney's sequel trilogy would have been Leia's movie, just as the first two were about Han and Luke, and this was evident in Colin Trevorrow's Duel of the Fates. After J.J. Abrams took over as writer and director, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker relied on unused footage from The Force Awakens and killed Leia off.
