MONTEREY — Viewers will be able to get a glimpse of the life and career of former Pebble Beach resident and father of reality television, Allen Funt, in a special preview screening of “Mister Candid Camera” at the Golden State Theatre Friday.
“He was one of my heroes and I followed as best I could – for most of my career – in his footsteps,” said Peter Funt, a Pebble Beach resident. “But I’ve never felt that his story was properly told or that he got enough credit for really inventing reality television – certainly the hidden-camera genre – and making so many people around the world smile for so many decades. So I thought I’d do it.”
The show – and Allen – are often credited with inventing the hidden-camera television genre, but Funt said his dad wasn’t a practical jokester himself. In fact, he never referred to the show as a prank show.
