The 36-year-old reliever made it back in July after 13 months of rehab only to land back on the injured list with an MCL sprain three games later, but he hopes he can help the team in the playoffs.

It seemed like a cruel joke. Daniel Hudson endured 13 months of rehab after tearing the ACL in his left knee, fought through setbacks that delayed his recovery – tendinitis and inflammation first in his right ankle and then in the patella tendon in his knee that required a cortisone injection – and all he got was three more games, sending him back to the trainer’s room and threatening to put an end to the 36-year-old reliever’s career.

Hudson admits he was in a dark place for “awhile” after the injury. But his wife, Sara, wouldn’t let him wallow in self-pity and Daniel said she never suggested that maybe – just maybe – this was the baseball gods’ way of suggesting it might be time to walk away from the game. He has kept his arm in shape throughout his knee rehab and is long-tossing out to 120 feet while adding “a lot of more dynamic stuff in the weight room” to rehabilitate his knee.

While he clutches that optimism close, Hudson acknowledges he has started to wrap his head around the possibility that he has thrown his last pitch in a major-league game.
