Focus Features successfully sold their adaptation/continuation of the ITV television showas a demographically-specific event movie. The period piece upstairs/downstairs drama earned a whopping $31 million over the weekend. That’s the biggest opening ever for Focus Features, well above the $22 million opening weekend ofThe film opened with $13.84 million on Friday, including $2.1 million in Thursday previews and $2.2 million in sneak previews from the previous Thursday.
Directed by Michael Engler and penned by Julian Fellowes, the film earned an A from Cinemascore and is apparently playing quite well to fans of the show. It easily lorded over Brad Pitt’s original sci-fi flick and Sylvester Stallone’s action sequel, in another triumph of IP and brand over star power. , in this case, is a case of “giving the people what they want.”
