They came to mourn three of the four victims in the fatal shooting – Guadalupe Cruz, Juan Cruz and Jasmine Borjas Santos.
As the sun began to set in northwest Dallas, a crowd began to swell at theThey stood outside shoulder-to-shoulder and huddled near the doorway of an apartment in the south end of the complex. All to mourn the lives ofThe crowd numbered nearly 100 people by the vigil’s end. They brought a variety of flowers — sunflowers, lilies, roses, among others — and laid them along the doormat. Among the flowers sat a white stuffed bunny.
Friends and relatives said Juan Diego Cruz and Guadalupe Cruz, also known as Lupe, were brothers. Jasmine Borjas Santos was Guadalupe Cruz’s wife, they said. Artemio Maldonado, 18, and Azucena Sanchez, 20, are in custody in connection with the shooting. An affidavit said Maldonado admitted to shooting all four victims during a confrontation.
Now four lives are lost. Those in attendance Tuesday all had different relationships with the victims — some were family, both close and distant, and others grew up with them. Little children came along with adults, even babies.Near the front of the crowd, people spoke in Spanish the first few lines of “Ave María,” or “Hail Mary,” and the crowd finished it: “Santa María, Madre de Dios, ruega por nosotros pecadores, ahora y en la hora de nuestra muerte. Amen.
