DPS Director Steve McCraw said the agency did not immediately notify victims because of the ongoing criminal investigation. But the delay has drawn the ire of some state lawmakers.

AUSTIN – The state is in the process of notifying Texans whose driver’s licenses were shipped to an international crime ring in aThe Department of Public Safety publicly acknowledged the breach on Monday, saying “a Chinese organized crime group based in New York” used data drawn from the dark web to order thousands of duplicate driver’s licenses in Texans’ names.

“A criminal investigation was initiated and it was determined that subjects obtained personal information about you from an outside source which was used to accessonline services,” said the letter, which is signed by Sheri Gipson, who leads the Driver License Division. “At that time, the mailing address was changed and a replacement driver license was requested. This fraudulent activity occurred in the later part of 2022.
