Federal officials also issued a warning advising Americans not to travel to Tamaulipas, where four Americans were kidnapped and two of them killed.

Two of four Americans that were kidnapped in Matamoros were found dead. The other two have since been returned to the United States.

“Drug cartel violence and other criminal activity represent a significant safety threat to anyone who crosses into Mexico right now,” DPS Director Steven McCraw said.Texas Sen. Mexico is a popular spring break destination, especially cities within the Quintana Roo state, which includes Cancún, Cozumel and Playa del Carmen. Matamoros is a known location where Americans have gone in search of cheap medications and low-cost surgeries. Relatives of the kidnapped Americans said one had planned to get a tummy tuck surgery from a doctor in Matamoros.
