Driver dies in crash during Border Patrol pursuit [Breaking]
A driver being pursued by Border Patrol was killed when his car crashed off Interstate 8 in El Cajon Saturday, the California Highway Patrol said.
The crash happened about 3 p.m. on the westbound freeway near the Mollison Avenue exit, CHP said. Witnesses estimated the 2017 Infiniti sedan was going more than 100 mph on the right shoulder while it was being pursued, according to CHP. The Infiniti lost control, flew off the freeway and went down an embankment, crashing into a tree, according to CHP and video of the wreckage from OnScene TV.
The driver, a 19-year-old man, sustained major injuries and died at the scene, CHP said. His name was not released. The Highway Patrol, which is investigating the crash, said it was still working to determine why the driver was being pursued. A Border Patrol spokesperson deferred all questions to CHP.
