The age gap between two of Dune's actors makes their characters' dynamic a little weird, but in the end, the movie was able to pull it off.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Dune cast two lead characters with performers whose real-life age difference would be weird within their fictional dynamic, but ultimately, the actors were able to pull it off. Denis Villeneuve's adaptation has no shortage of exceptionally talented performers who vary in many regards — age included.
Villeneuve was on target in his film, and Dune's cast of characters was altogether accurate to the source material. Herbert's expose of the feudal relationships of planets across the galaxy is complemented by the novel's portrayal of people of assorted ages, as it's able to demonstrate how the conflicts of the universe affect the old, the young, and everyone in between.
Timothée Chalamet Is Only 12 Years Younger Than Rebecca Ferguson The adventures of the mother-son duo of Paul Atreides and Lady Jessica take up the better half of both the Dune novel and Denis Villeneuve's movie adaptation. After the conspiracies of the enemy House Harkonnen annihilate Paul and Jessica's namesake faction, House Atreides, they are forced to escape into the desert where they are then able to join forces with the native Fremen people.
Chalamet is 27 years old, and Ferguson is 39, meaning there is a mere 12-year age difference between them when they came to set to portray Paul and Lady Jessica. Despite the slim age gap, their performance in their child-parent dynamic was so impressive that it's hard to tell, or even guess, that so few years separated the two. Their convincing portrayal is even more impressive with the knowledge that the Dune novel implied a steeper age difference between Paul and Jessica.
The gap in age between mother and son is suggestively larger in Herbert's novel, making the casting choices of Paul and Lady Jessica in Denis Villeneuve's movie a little unusual. However, the faith in these actors' abilities was immediately validated. Timothée Chalamet and Rebecca Ferguson gave spectacular renditions of Herbert's characters that have helped make the film a critical success and garnered weighty anticipation for the upcoming Dune sequel.
