Born in Houston but raised in the Netherlands, Gijs Brouwer has seen his success grow in...

Gijs Brouwer plays forehand against Frances Tiafoe during the semifinal match of the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship at River Oaks Country Club in Houston, TX on Sunday, April 9, 2023.Even though he doesn’t carry an American passport, Gijs Brouwer swears he’s never hassled when he’s entering the U.S.

Over the past two springs, Brouwer has played five matches there, including two quarterfinals and a semifinal, in the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U. S. Men’s Clay Court Championship. Ironically, Yolanda and Idso Brouwer flew in to see him play this week but, thanks to all the rain, only got to watch his 6-4, 6-4 win over another American, Aleksandar Kovacevic on Monday. But simply giving himself the opportunity to test himself against Tiafoe, who climbed to a career-high No. 12 with the victory — and would move to 11 by defeating Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry, a 6-3, 6-4 winner over German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann in the other semifinal, in what became a first-ever Easter SundaySo. . .
