A 21-year-old man is facing multiple charges after allegedly hitting two pedestrians with his vehicle in East Austin and then fleeing the scene. According to court documents, Narziso Garcia is charged with Aggravated Assault with a Motor Vehicle, Failure to Stop and Render Aid, and Tampering with Evidence.
It happened Saturday, Sep. 9, at the intersection of E. 7th Street and Medina Drive. Court documents say the two victims were hit from behind at around 7:30 p.m. as they were in a walkway that was fully enclosed in scaffolding. Both were later transported to Dell Seton Medical Center to be treated for serious injuries, including a traumatic brain injury for one of the victims.
A week later, a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle was pulled over on I-35. Garcia was arrested and questioned by APD officers, and an arrest affidavit says he admitted to being distracted by his phone at the time of the hit-and-run and fleeing the scene out of fear of being arrested. He also admitted to attempting to cover up the crime by replacing the vehicle's windshield, court documents said.
