For 12 years, Strangeways served bottled beer and bar snacks on Fitzhugh Avenue in Dallas. It is closing because the building was sold to a new owner.
Strangeways, a neighborhood bar in Dallas, will close in October 2023 after 12 years on Fitzhugh Avenue.
Strangeways operators Rocio “Rosie” Ildemaro and her brother Eric Sanchez plan to sell the bar’s remaining bottled beers in the next few weeks, then pack up and leave. They don’t want to go, Ildemaro says, but the building was sold to a new owner. They were not able to buy it.Strangeways dates back to Aug. 3, 2010, when the family members behind it signed a lease. It’ll take a month to spruce up, they thought. But exactly one year later, on Aug. 3, 2011, Strangeways opened.
In the early days of Strangeways, the owners told The Dallas Morning News, "They keep saying this is going to be the next Henderson [Avenue]. To be quite honest to you, I don't want that. I'm very happy with there being a La Michoacana in front of us, a hair salon next to me, a rundown car wash next to me. I think it keeps the neighborhood genuine."
“My brother could have had a full season’s worth of HGTV,” Ildemaro says. “Our uncle helped us with that bar top. My mom did a lot of the welding and woodwork. It was 100% a labor of love, from our whole family.”interview from when the bar opened, the co-owners said the building at 2429 N. Fitzhugh Avenue was “just like an onion.”“Keep peeling it, we’ll get down to the part where it doesn’t smell bad,” they said, “but it just kept making us cry more and more.
