Despite the darkness of a child missing for more than a year, there remains hope.
Bexar County Clerk Lucy Adame-Clark speaks on the steps of the courthouse at a vigil on Dec. 20 — the one year anniversary for when Lina Sardar Khil vanished from a playground. For the many hoping and praying for the well-being and return of Lina Sardar Khil, 2022 ended the same sad way 2021 ended: the child still missing, her whereabouts a mystery.
Her disappearance led to an immediate, intensive and massive search, which included checking every apartment in the complex, using all-terrain vehicles to search wooded areas and deploying an FBI dive team. Volunteers scoured fields and businesses within miles of where she was last seen. “She will be on our lips and in our hearts,” Riaz Sardar Khil said. “No one can imagine that which we are going through … we have to hold and be hopeful, but inside we are broken.”We are now past the one-year anniversary of Lina’s disappearance and into a new year. Next month, Lina will turn 5. We speak in the present tense because despite the darkness of a child missing for more than a year, there remains hope.
That Lina Sardar Khil has been missing longer than a year is ominous. That she is separated from her family is a crime that can’t be excused and a pain that can never be removed or forgotten.
