Voters would be wise to reject Proposition A, which is woefully off target.
We don’t share the certainty that Proposition A will trigger the huge spike in crime its opponents have asserted. But we also can’t dismiss this concern. And we do have major concerns about stripping away officer discretion, the potential morale hit for city police, the broad scope of the proposition and such a lenient response to low-level crimes. This is a deeply flawed measure.
Each subject should be its own proposition, allowing voters to make individual decisions on the merits. Instead, voters must make an all-or-nothing choice.Chokeholds will not be completely banned, but will still be allowed if an officer believes it is necessary to prevent serious injury or death.
. The only aspect of Proposition A the city would enforce is the creation of a civilian justice director, but even this is problematic. Proposition A precludes anyone from having worked in law enforcement from holding the position. This makes no sense. There are many people with law enforcement backgrounds who could provide insight into police work while promoting effective reforms and policies.
