Edward 'Barry' Schiano, father of Rutgers football coach Greg Schiano, died this week.
Edward Schiano, “Barry” of North Haledon and previously Wyckoff, passed away at home surrounded by family on April 17 at the age of 81. Barry is the son of Rachel and Dominick Schiano and brother to ten siblings. He is survived by Renee, his wife of 60 years as well as his children Barry and wife Debbie , Lauren and husband Tom Lauderdale, Greg, and wife Christy and Daryl and husband Chris McGrath.
In an interview with the Bergen Record’s Tara Sullivan in 2007, Barry Schiano described himself as a “street guy.” “I was born and raised in a back bedroom in Carlstadt, the baby of 11 children,” said Barry Schiano, his deep, throaty voice dripping with Italian attitude and Jersey edge. “Fact one I learned from my mother and father - I’m a street guy, I have street sense. I can meet you and in 10 minutes know what you are. Nothing came easy for me. Everything I had, I had to work for. Building a business, the kids saw that. Most of New Jersey is like that, especially this area: The fittest will survive.
“It was a great place,” Schiano said. “When I went away to school, I didn’t think there was anyplace else but Wyckoff. I literally was that close-minded. Why would anyone want to live anywhere else? You get into the coaching profession and, yes, you see there are other nice places. But that will always be home.”The visitation for Edward Schiano will be on Sunday, April 23, from 1-5 p.m. at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home in Wyckoff. The funeral mass will take place on Monday, April 24, at 10 a.m.
