After ringing out 2022 with a four-game winning streak, EWU_Athletics has eyes on banishing fourth-quarter heartbreaks and celebrating a victorious 2023 in college football.
Another key change was switching from a 3-4 defensive front to a 4-3 and a 4-2-5 hybrid scheme. Opponents averaged just 11.8 points over the last four games, compared to 37.2 points in the first seven.
Still, EWU remains a bit underfunded in terms of scholarships. Morgan estimates the program has “27 or 28” scholarships, well below the Division II maximum of 36. It’s still about 10 more than what the Tigers had under previous coach Greg Ruffin. That money is divided up among a travel squad of 58 players and other non-walk-ons.
While that’s a respectable record, EWU also didn’t have to play the SIAC’s three best teams — Benedict, Fort Valley or Tuskegee — and each of their league wins came against the bottom four schools . “My expectations were to win the conference, but we still made a big jump from last year. Internally, seeing how guys are reacting and how focused they are, I think we’re going to have a bigger jump next season. We’re just so bought in right now and I think this offseason will make a big difference.
